If you are an angler Boston is surrounded by some excellent fishing. The towns main drains, the Maud Foster drain…or know locally as the Bargate and the South 40ft drain both produce some cracking bream & tench fishing. While if you are a predator angler then there are still some good (20lb plus) pike to be had and some amazing perch…..the 2018 season produced 5 different 5lb plus fish to my knowledge so probably more.
Both these drains are controlled by Boston and District Angling association along with the Trader drain and day tickets can be purchased on the bank when the bailiff comes round for just £5 per day….or an amazing value for money at just £35 per year. If you follow their Facebook Page you’ll get regular catch reports and see how the drains are currently fishing.
On the outskirts of the town is the west Fen Drain, this is towards the end of Horncastle road and runs out through Frithvile which is currently Free fishing….as is the towns River the R Witham. Please take care as you get out of town on the Witham as there are some sections which are club and private sections.
If your idea of a good days fishing is on a more commercial venue the the town has a wealth of caravan type sites where lakes are open to the public and not just site residents. The main one is Westwood lakes which also the home of the towns only tackle shop. Westwoods holds regular matches where winning weights are into the hundreds of pounds!! Day tickets at westwoods are £7.50 per day.
On the outskirts of town in the village of Sutterton is one of the towns little gems, Lake Helen. A very picturesque 1.75 acre lake which holds a wide range of species inc a good head of carp…..most in the 10-15lb bracket but with some 20lb+ The thing that puts Helen on the map is its eels….many in the 5lb plus with the odd 7lb fish…the lake record for an eel is a colossal 9lb 6oz. Tickets at lake Helen are are £5 per rod per day or £20 for 24 hours using upto three rods. These are purchased on the bank, just rock up and find somewhere to fish and the lake owner will be round in due course.
